Jane, Witch Doctor et al.:
Pardon me for sticking my two cents worth in..
While searching for info on the Savage (thinking seriously about buying
one, but, like you, wanting a way to increase power), I found this web
site:
http://www.vintagethunder.com/
They make a bike called the Snorton - a Savage engine in a Norton-style
frame. They apparently do some engine mods to it. I emailed them with
questions about what they do to the engine. A person named Skeeter
replied that they keep the stock displacement, "clean up" the intake and
exhaust ports, advance the cam timing 4 degrees, install a 36mm Mikuni
round slide carb (smaller than stock) and a reverse-cone style exhaust.
He tells me that with these mods they get about 50 (yes, 50!) horsepower at
the REAR WHEEL. IF that's true, very impressive. He says the stock 4
valve head has a lot of power-potential and is the reason for the
increase. This KINDA makes sense, since the Savage 650, the Intruder 800
and the Intruder 1400 all have the same 4 valve TSCC (Twin Swirl
Combustion Chamber) designed cylinder head. And the 800 and 1400 have
always made good power/torque. He says they have the carbs and exhaust pipes in
stock. If you go this route, let me know. I'm really getting the urge to
buy one, and this might push me over the edge.
Good luck!
